Jaap Viljoen of Rooiklip Nursery in the historic town of Swellendam (on the garden route between Cape Town and George) has become an expert on growing aloe hybrids in winter rainfall conditions since he relocated to the Western Cape in 2006. He operates a wholesale nursery but welcomes visitors by appointment. He is putting the final touches to a tourist centre on the nursery property that will be well worth the drive from Cape Town. He supplies nurseries all over the Western Cape province. His wife Annatjie (082 902 8720) runs a lovely Guest House on the nursery property, highly recommended for weekend stay-overs.
Jack Wortmann and Ben Botha are born and bred Natalians. The nursery in Peacevale off the N3 between Durban and Pietermaritzburg is run by Jack. Ben is a landscaper of note and also a regular contributor to the Yahoo internet Aloe Group. Both Jack and Ben know the local conditions very well and have been growing aloes for many years. Their nursery serves nearly all of Kwazulu-Natal. Jack would like to add more retail nurseries to his client list. Members of the public are welcome, but please contact Jack or Ben before visiting the nursery.
Kotie Retief, the founder of Gariep Plants in Pretoria, has been involved with aloes all his life. He expanded his export business in 1995 to include a retail nursery so visitors can come and go as they please. Nursery hours from 09h00 to 15h00 Tuesdays to Saturdays, and during the aloe season (15 May to 15 September) on Sundays from 10h00 to 12h00 as well. Both Kotie and his co-owner Sean are seasoned aloe growers and can provide expert guidance on all aspects of aloe care. The nursery is well worth a visit as Kotie has many of the currently available aloe hybrid cultivars in his show garden that becomes a riot of colour with aloe flowers as soon as the cooler weather sets in. The nursery’s popular AloExpo draws visitors from far and wide.
Witkoppen Wildflower Nursery near Fourways in Gauteng has been a centre for aloe hybrids since 2001. Their Aloe Weekend has become a much anticipated event in the Southern Gauteng gardening calendar. Both the owner, Malcolm Hepplewhite and his manager Tinus are knowledgeable aloe people. The nursery is open every day and visitors are welcome.
Aloe-Aloe Horticulture is the sole marketer and distributor of these sunbird aloes across Australia and New Zealand where, as the "aloe-aloe collection" they have been flowering up a storm. Contact Mike Dent for details of retail distrbutors across Australia. Commercial orders can be made from their large wholesale nursery at Tamborine near Brisbane, Australia
Although Sunbird Aloes does not run a retail nursery, we will be glad to assist with special queries or if you are unable to find the aloe cultivar you are looking for. We will be glad to recommend landscapers in the catchment areas of our licenced growers with aloe experience that can source and plant your hybrid aloe selection for you.
